  1. How is the Pumpkinvine Trails Coalition different from Friends of the Pumpkinvine?
    Think of it as Friends 2.0. We’ve adopted a new name, structure, and expanded mission—but we’re still the same nonprofit (just with a new DBA). We continue to preserve and improve the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail while also working to grow the trail network beyond its original 17 miles.
  1. What is the Pumpkinvine Trail Network?
    It’s the broader system of connected trails in Elkhart County, including the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail, Mapleheart Trail, Maple City Greenway, and River Greenway. The network also reflects the future vision in the Connect in Elkhart County plan, which will link even more communities through trails.
  1. What is Connect in Elkhart County?
    It’s the county’s official trails master plan. Created in 2022, it brought together 20 local plans into one shared vision: 130 miles of interconnected trails—including 62 new miles over time.
  1. How long will it take to build all these new trails?
    Trail development is a long-term effort. Expanding the network will likely take more than a decade.
  1. Why invest in trails?
    Trails bring lasting value. They support health, increase property values, attract tourism, strengthen local businesses, and foster a deeper connection to nature and community. They benefit residents, businesses, and governments alike.
  1. I’m not a cyclist or walker. How does this benefit me?
    A well-connected trail network eases traffic, supports local retail, improves air quality, and enhances public health. It also boosts economic development by attracting visitors, jobs, and investment.
  1. What are the different trails, and where are they?
    • Pumpkinvine Nature Trail: 17 miles from Abshire Park (Goshen) to Shipshewana Town Park
    • Maple City Greenway: Goshen’s citywide trail system (30+ miles)
    • Mapleheart Trail: 6 miles from Goshen to Elkhart (via Wilden Ave. to Hively Ave.)
    • River Greenway: 4 miles through the Elkhart Environmental Center to Prairie Street

  1. How are donations used?
    In 2024, 90% of donations directly supported trail maintenance and development. With long-term support from the Community Foundation of Elkhart County covering most overhead, your gift goes even further. Donations help us:
    • Close trail gaps and support enhancements
    • Communicate with the public via our website, social media, and printed materials
    • Host events and presentations
    • Engage volunteers and plant native vegetation along the trail
