Trail Etiquette & E-Bikes

Brittany ShortPumpkinvine News

We’ve been hearing concerns about how fast some users are going on the trails, especially with e-bikes. We want to clarify what’s allowed and remind everyone of safe trail etiquette.

E-bikes can be a great option: they extend range, make biking possible for those with physical limitations, and help families ride together. But because they can increase speed, inconsiderate use puts others at risk. Not all “e-bikes” are alike. Some are really motorbikes with no pedals—these are not human-powered and are never allowed on our trails.

When we say “e-bike,” we mean pedal-assist bicycles. Indiana allows Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes (assist up to 20 mph) anywhere regular bikes are permitted. Class 3 bikes (assist up to 28 mph) are not allowed on our trail network. The term e-bike is also used to refer to bikes that function much more like a motorcycle, have no pedals, and are not human-powered at all. These bikes have the ability to go much faster and are not allowed under any circumstances.

With so many devices on the market, enforcement can’t catch everything, but we can reduce risk through awareness and etiquette.

No matter what you ride, please help keep the trails safe:
•    Follow the 15 mph speed limit
•    Pass on the left, stay to the right
•    Let others know when passing

We’re adding more signage along the network and invite you to help spread the word.
