Year-end Letter 2024
November 12, 2024
Dear Pumpkinvine Nature Trail supporter,
I hope that you are enjoying the turn-of-season, both outdoors and in. Over the years the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail has become an integral part of our communities. This is one of the most beautiful fall seasons in recent memory and for many, the trail is a serene escape into nature. We are grateful for the trail and all those who have worked to create it.
However, we face long-term challenges that threaten the trails’ vibrancy. Funding opportunities at both the state and federal levels for the maintenance of multi-use trails are nearly non-existent. To ensure long-term sustainability, we rely heavily on the generosity of trail users, businesses, and nonprofit partners like you. Without adequate funding, we risk losing not only the trail’s natural beauty but also the community connection it fosters.
Your support is critical to our mission. With your contribution, we can repair sections of the trail that have reached the end of their lifespan. Doing so ensures the Pumpkinvine remains a safe and enjoyable space for everyone. Your donation will go directly towards essential projects, including:
• Rehabilitation between CR 33 & CR 26: This segment was constructed 15 years ago and is flanked by wetlands. Much of the trail has deteriorated and needs reconstruction.
• Root bump maintenance: In some cases, the bumps caused by tree roots can be ground down and sealed. In other cases, the segment of asphalt should be removed in order to access the problematic root, and then repaired. Regular upkeep will keep the trail safe and accessible.
• Beautification: Plans are being made to both plant and enhance natural prairie and wildflower beds. Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to preserving the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail.
The legacy of the Friends of the Pumpkinvine is shaping our work on trails and pathways throughout Elkhart County, which is now called the Pumpkinvine Trails Coalition. (We are retiring the Friends of the Pumpkinvine name.)
As we have in the past, together we will ensure that this cherished Pumpkinvine pathway remains a place of
solace, beauty, and connection for years to come. Every contribution makes a tangible difference. We hope
you’ll consider giving generously this season, helping us to protect and enhance a community treasure that
means so much to so many.
With gratitude,
Brittany Short
