Year End Letter from the Board

Dear Pumpkinvine Nature Trail supporter,

The final section of the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail between county roads 20 and 35 in Middlebury is now open to the public. Walkers, runners and cyclists can now travel easily between Goshen, Middlebury, and Shipshewana without leaving the safety of the trail. The vision, decades in the making, is finally complete. It’s difficult to fully express the gratitude felt for the decades of dedication and resources offered by so many organizations and individuals. Together, we’ve created something exceptional.

This final connection is an incredibly important milestone, and we will celebrate it as it deserves at next year’s annual Pumpkinvine Bike Ride in June. We also know that much work remains to be done. As you consider your year-end giving, we invite you to support the effort in multiple ways.

First, we ask you to support the preservation and maintenance of this trail. Public funding opportunities for trail maintenance come and go, and a permanent and reliable source of private funding is needed to ensure long-term viability. The Pumpkinvine Nature Trail Endowment Fund was established to provide for the trail’s future care and maintenance needs. Gifts made directly to the fund at the Community Foundation of Elkhart County will be eligible to receive a 25% match.

Second, we ask you to join us as we move into this organization’s exciting, next phase. After months of deliberation and discussion, our Board of Directors has made the decision to expand its mission beyond the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail, to include Elkhart County’s trail network. In the years to come, we will be working alongside a coalition of partners, to develop spurs and other network connections while also sustaining a focus on trial preservation. Like a true pumpkin vine, our trail network will grow and extend from where the original seeds took root. We can’t think of a better way to honor the incredible legacy of this organization than by furthering the work that it began. Financial gifts will continue to support new development projects and immediate maintenance needs.

This giving season please join us to care for and grow the next generation of Elkhart County’s trails together.
