Friends of the Pumpkinvine Receive Construction Grant from the Community Foundation of Elkhart County

Pumpkinvine Nature Trail

Map of trails to be built in the gapThe Community Foundation of Elkhart County recently awarded a $250,000 grant for trail construction in the "gap"Roads 20 and 35. Friends own 0.43 mile of the former Pumpkin Vine Railroad corridor in this section (solid green line on the map); however, they need 600 feet of additional land (dashed green line on the map) to reach County Road 35 where the existing trail (orange line)from Middlebury ends. Friends are negotiating with neighbors to purchase the needed land.

Friends have been working for several years to build trail between County Roads 33 and 20 (yellow line). They recently bought land for that purpose and construction is expected in 2018.

Pumpkinvine Nature Trail Posted on May 13, 2017 by John YoderFebruary 19, 2021

An article in the May 2017 AARP Bulletin says that the U.S. is seeing a rise in deaths for older pedestrians and cyclists.

“Pedestrian deaths rose by 12 percent from 2006 to 2015, while bicycle deaths rose by 12 percent from 2014 to 2015, according to figures from the National Highway Safety Administration.”

Florida has the top five most dangerous places to live:  Cape Coral-Fort Myers, Palm Bay Melbourne, Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford, Jacksonville; and Deltona-Daytona Beach.  (p.6)
