Phases 3 and 4 will link Middlebury and Shipshewana with 7.1 miles of trail. Construction contracts will be let in July 2010 and the trail is expected to be opened for public use in the spring 2011.
Construction of a tunnel under U.S. 20, Phase 5C, is in progress and completion will be in October. This project will build 2100 feet of trail southeast of U.S. 20.
Preliminary design is in progress for Phase 6 in Middlebury.

Bridges
The Pumpkinvine corridor has six wooden trestle bridges. The largest is 160-foot long and was renovated in March 2005. Three more bridges (one near CR 33, Phase 5A and two between Middlebury and the LaGrange/Elkhart County line Phase 3) were renovated in 2009

Tunnel
The Pumpkinvine Railroad passed under U.S. 20 through a tunnel south of Middlebury. The tunnel was removed 15 to 20 years ago and the highway was reconstructed about 20 feet above the railroad bed.
A 120-foot tunnel for the trail under U.S. 20 is under construction. The drawing on your right is an artist’s conception of the tunnel.
